Dorottya is a young Hungarian actress with a burning desire: to make it on the English stage. Legendary actor Sir Michael Gifford suffers from an incurable disease, and has one desire: be left alone. When Dorottya becomes his carer they both hope their wish will be fulfilled.
The Carer is the last film scripted by the late Gilbert Adair, (screenwriter of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers) and was co-written by the director and long time Adair collaborator, Tom Kinninmont.
The English language film by Hungarian director, Janos Edelenyi, starred Brian Cox, Emilia Fox, Anna Chancellor and newcomer Coco König. Filming wrapped in March 2015.
Brian Cox plays Sir Michael Gifford – a star of stage and screen. He describes the movie as “the story of an unlikely relationship between a famous actor and his immigrant carer”.
The film was produced by Jozsef Berger (Essential Killing) of Mythberg Films (Hungary), Steve Bowden (Prima Primavera) of Vita Nova Films (UK), Charlotte Wontner (The Sick House, Island) of Hopscotch Films (UK), and Kai Künnemann (Madame Bovary) of A-Company (Germany).
